And there are many people prefer to patter code than password, because the first one is more interesting and creative than the latter one. Gmail
Usually, when you enter wrong pattern code, you will be prompt to enter pin number at the initial setup of your phone. Wipe Recovery

But different smart phone has different key combination for wipe recovery, such as (volume minus and power button for HTC and volume plus, power button and home button for Samsung smart phone). Wipe recovery is equal to Factory Reset and it will change to way to unlock when you start phone again.
Root
Usually, root will be the last way if you forgot the pattern code. But if you have tried above way and still failed to get it right, it is necessary to root the phone. You can download software and root for the phone by yourself or ask for professional service from cell phone store.
